Sign of the times

I signed up with Mint.com — a free money management site — to get a more detailed picture of my financial situation. By default they provide you with various different alerts, such as when a large amount clears your account, if you have a low balance, etc.

I had to chuckle at the alert I saw today when I logged in. How quickly things change when you don’t live with your girlfriend’s parents anymore:

This month I spent over $200 on groceries, compared to last month\'s $1.87

Gray day

Looking out over the green trees and the gray sky

It looks like I just missed the rain. The above image is a picture I took from the front porch just before I went on my semi-regular walk around the neighborhood. The days here have been lovely lately.

My best friend is getting married on Saturday. I can’t believe we’re all grown up… but I’ll continue to enjoy the fact that we’re all still young adults!

College is almost over

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

I’ve recently been giving some thought to creating a separate site for a freelance web development business. It’d be nice to keep this domain at a more personal level (although I try to keep it fairly professional and relevant without veering off into MySpace-esque blathering) while having a separate site to give out to potential clients and the like.

But I’ll have to think of a name, first.

It’s the last week of college for me, and I graduate in 12 days. It’s difficult to find the motivation to keep going to class when I’d rather be doing other things like getting my move to St. Louis figured out, cleaning the apartment, etc. I’m taking some more things down to St. Louis on Tuesday, and possibly over the weekend as well. There may also be one more trip to St. Joseph in the cards, depending on how much stuff I find that needs to be taken care of. Either way, things will be hectic at the same time they are winding down.

But perhaps most importantly of all, my Aeron chair has been delivered and I’ve ordered the 24″ iMac. December 15th will truly be a good day.

Truly one of the greatest joys a geek can experience is an unboxing.

My dad had his gallbladder removed today. Here’s wishing him a speedy recovery!

Jack-of-all-trades

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

I sometimes find it hard to focus on one certain area of technology because I constantly find myself wanting to do everything. Even though my true passion has again and again proved to be web development, I can’t help but want to try my hand at various other facets of modern creation. For example, I dabbled quite a bit in 3D modeling and animation throughout my high school and early college years. These days I want to write software for OS X (it’s just so pretty!).

On the one hand I like that I’m exploring several different skillsets, but at the same time I worry that by not focusing entirely on one thing I’m falling into the trap that the saying “Jack-of-all-trades, master of none” warns us about. The trick here might be finding a way to combine these interests under the same roof of “web development”. I’ve used the 3D know-how in web projects before, and being able to write desktop applications would surely come in handy for certain web-related uses. Guess we’ll see how things turn out — everything should become much clearer once I find a career that has me working in a certain area.

Finished with summer classes!

I just took the last online exam for my business class! I now have all of August to do whatever I please. I’ll be using a large chunk of this time to work on the aforementioned project, I’m sure.
