My hosting provider, Dreamhost, is in the midst of becoming a “greener” company. One part of this is moving to more efficient servers. Since this kind of massive undertaking inherently comes with its fair share of problems, they are offering free upgrades to “unlimited” bandwidth and storage for users that volunteer to be moved first. Since this site isn’t vitally important I decided to be one of the guinea pigs.

Fair warning in case the site goes down for a time!

You’ll notice that all of the pictures that were previously in various posts are now missing. This is because of an FTP anomaly when I upgraded to the latest version of WordPress. For some reason Transmit (an FTP program for OS X) defaults to “Overwrite” instead of “Merge” when uploading files and directories that already exist on the server. As a result, it first deletes your existing data, then replaces it with the new files.

Fail.

Don’t panic, the site is simply in a state of limbo. I will have it restored soon.

There are some odd things going on with my WordPress installation. The two main issues I’ve noticed are

1. I am unable to upgrade to the latest release, even when I manually overwrite every file via FTP and
2. My theme seems to randomly reset itself to the default

I’m a little spooked. Are there such things as web-poltergeists?

Update (01/19/08): Turns out I was making a rather silly mistake. I was copying all of the new WordPress files into my root directory instead of the appropriate /blog directory. Oops! That might explain a few things. We’ll see if the crazy behavior now subsides.

I realize I’ve been neglecting this blog for quite some time now, but between my trip to Berlin, moving to the new apartment, and school there really hasn’t been a whole lot of time for web development. Figured I’d write a quick note to let everyone know I’m still alive!

Hi everyone, I’m back. I have a lot to tell you about, but I don’t think I can lay it all down via keyboard right now — I’m pretty tired.

As a sidenote, I was a bit hesitant to use someone else’s theme, as this is a blog about my journey to becoming a web expert. But in the end I figured it was better to go with this than stare at the boring default theme. School is keeping me very busy at the moment, but I’ll sit down and create a look of my own once I can find the time.
