Sign of the times
July 14th, 2008I signed up with Mint.com — a free money management site — to get a more detailed picture of my financial situation. By default they provide you with various different alerts, such as when a large amount clears your account, if you have a low balance, etc.
I had to chuckle at the alert I saw today when I logged in. How quickly things change when you don’t live with your girlfriend’s parents anymore:

I’ve heard that Mint is amazing, but I’ve never taken the time to check it out. What do you rate it?

@Alisa - I’d probably give it a 7/10 right now. There are a lot of cool features — one of the most visually impressive is ‘Trends’ which breaks down your spending categorically in lots of fancy Flash charts — but also a few areas that have room for improvement. The biggest complaint I have at the moment is that you’re forced to turn over your login credentials for any account that you want to add to the service, which is a BIG security concern. You’re also unable to re-categorize mislabeled transactions; for example, my monthly car payment shows up as a “fee”, so Mint has been sending me alerts every month when the bill comes in acting like it’s a bad thing. I submitted a bug report to them a couple of days ago, so hopefully they’ll get things fixed.
All-in-all I’d say it’s worth a look as long as you’re comfortable with giving out your online banking information.
