I rather like the bay area and Northern CA in general, but it seems like everyone in California has an hour car commute. I really can't see myself ever putting up with something like that. Which is the main reason why I've been leaning towards having Portland, Oregon as my "where I want to get a job and maybe get old in" city. It's artsy and classy at the same time. Plus all the guys have good style there. ;) One summer I read a lot of Terry Pratchett books. And then I got burnt out.
